My daughter is always making things... potions, concoctions, art, you name it. This was by far her favorite birthday gift and has been using it nonstop since. I don't mind letting her break crayons to use this thing, crayons are cheap. I think the most important thing is to get all the wax out of the metal tray before it cools otherwise it's a pain. I haven't had any problems with the functionality.
A good item but takes time

My 5-year-old daughters really wanted this after seeing the commercial. It is actually a really cute item but certainly requires an adult to operate it and takes about 20 minutes to make 4 half crayons. I actually expected (and would have preferred) it to make new, full size crayons but instead, they give you 2 plastic pieces that you can stick each half-crayon into to make a new, 2-sided crayon. I can imagine we will misplace these plastic pieces eventually but it will be easy enough to color with the small crayons. It is fun and they do come out in pretty swirls and are fun to color with. My daughters were a little impatient the first time we made them, waiting for the finished product but now they help me set it up and then they know it takes a while so they are off doing other things until I surprise them with their new crayons! I saved all of our broken crayons thinking I was going to create all new ones from it but it is pretty time consuming so instead, we do it every once in a while. I would recommend this, though, if your child is asking for it. It is at least something new and different! Oh, and it requires a 60-watt light bulb with a skinny base to work so have that on hand!

This was the best idea for Christmas for my granddaughter. She loves to draw and color and had so many pieces of crayon that really added up. We kept buying more crayons, but now she enjoys making new colors and keeping the crayons that she has. This really is a great savings.
Crayola Crayon Maker is a great buy.
